Custom Made Orthotics

what you need to know

Downtown Chiropractic has been dispensing Custom-Made Orthotics in Regina since 2002.

What is a custom orthotic?

A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position.  They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. They fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole and have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

Who needs custom orthotics?

The symptoms of poor foot mechanics can include any one of the following:

  • localized foot pain
  • bunions, hammer toes
  • arch or heel pain, heel spurs
  • leg, shin, knee, hip pain
  • plantar fascitis
  • back pain

What can I do?

Your Chiropractor will examine your feet and your gait, followed by taking a foam impression of both feet in a non-weight bearing position.  Alongside the prescription from your health care physician (medical doctor or podiatrist) which must have a proper diagnosis, our assessment of your feet and the foam cast will form the basis for your orthotic to be made by The Orthotic Group in Markham,Ontario.

What insurance coverage is there for this medical device?

Most health care plans provide for coverage once-per-year for custom made orthotics prescribed by your health care practitioner and dispensed by your Chiropractor.

Will the orthotics be difficult to get used to?

Since the custom orthotic works to realign the structure of your foot you may feel pressure in some areas as the orthotic attempts to do its job.  For this reason, they must be worn in two hour intervals to start and slowly increase the wear time over two weeks.  The longer you wear your custom orthotics the more benefit you will get from them.
